The earliest known text on meridians and acupuncture is the Nei Ching, or Classic of Internal Medicine, traditionally ascribed to the legendary Yellow Emperor Huang Ti, supposed to have lived 2697-2596 BC. The Chinese became aware of an increased sensitivity of certain skin area (called points) when a body organ or function was impaired. These points followed a definite invariable topographical pattern over the body and could be used for diagnosing organ involvement in a variety of disorders.

The line that could be drawn linking a series of points associated with a particular organ was called a meridian and these meridians were identified with the various organs. We can compare the meridians and organs to the landscape around us. If we had a bird's eye view of any country the first thing we would probably notice would be the roads and larger highways on which cars and trucks and trucks move from place to place. These roads are like the network of channels or meridians which travel around the body.
